High Expectations of a Pro-Crypto U.S. Administration

The panel started with a discussion of how the U.S. election outcome has reshaped crypto market expectations for 2025. All the panelists expressed their optimism about the crypto market under a Trump administration, especially if the promise of establishing a national BTC strategic reserve materializes. The candidate took a pro-crypto stance during the campaign, and even launched a few crypto projects on his own, so he could be someone who understands the space.

Institutional adoption scaling could be something to look forward to. Janson Wang said, "The market has been talking about crypto's institutional adoption in the past two years, but this time, it's actually going to be a lot of institutional adoption driven by 

 and traditional funds, and investors have shown strong interest in those products."

Tommy Chen added, "Crypto-related regulations will be opening up and leaning on a more friendly side, potentially encouraging more Wall Street players to participate in crypto." 

However, there are also potential risks that all market participants should be aware of. Joe Takayama highlighted that "Trump has made a lot of promises during the campaign, and the market is expecting a lot of (positive) things will happen, and if the U.S. administration disappoints the market in some ways, there could be a downside risk."

U.S. inflation and interest rates are among macro traders' most watched factors. Since BTC is a macro asset now, these two factors also concern our panelists. Daniel Yu pointed out that the pressure of inflation remains intact, and interest rates in the U.S. are still at a relatively high level compared to historical data. That's why inflation hedging will still be a major narrative among institutional investors in 2025. He also added that BTC now appears as an alternative to gold as an 

With only one Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting left in 2024 for the U.S. Federal Reserve after the November 25 bps cut, Janson added that according to the CME FedWatch, there's only a 50% chance that the Fed will cut another 25 bps of its benchmark interest rate in the December 2024 meeting, and an equal probability that it will maintain interest rates at current levels. He also emphasized that interest rate traders have been betting the Fed will only reduce interest rates an additional 25 to 50 bps in the coming three to four months — a lot less than previously expected — which could contribute to a strong dollar and affect BTC’s price.

Despite many watchers directing their attention to the U.S. greenback, Joe Takayama expressed that it may not really affect the current crypto market at all — simply because crypto is a sentiment-driven asset, and market sentiment comes from the U.S. economy and how strong it is. He also added that many investors he knows are taking a lot less risk than they would like, which means they’re under-exposed and would need greater risk appetite to buy risk-on assets, such as BTC.

Why Trade Options? — And How to Capitalize on Volatility

The panel also discussed the advantages of options trading over other derivatives. Institutional traders generally prefer trading options in crypto, simply because of its volatile nature. For example, if a trader enters the market with perpetuals or futures, they could face liquidation or margin call risk, even when the price increases, but it doesn’t happen in options trading. Some of the panelists also shared that, as opposed to using options outright, they make a good complement to an overall investment portfolio and enhance their return profiles.

The panelists also discussed some of the possible options trading strategies for the current market, such as cash-covered put selling. On the one hand, traders can benefit from getting the underlying asset at a lower price if physical delivery is accepted. Otherwise, traders can earn a decent yield from the options premium. Kendrick also shared his insights, adding that traders might also consider a covered call 

 put selling combination, so that they can acquire the underlying asset at a lower entry price and, at the same time, use the option premiums from short options to cover the cost of the call options. This way, it's more like a tool for cash flow.

Other panelists also contributed valuable insights on their BTC options strategies. For example, if a trader is bullish on BTC over the medium-to-long term, they may consider a three-to-six-months call spread so that they can buy one out-of-the-money (OTM) call and sell another call with a higher strike price. However, if the price of BTC doesn't move much, the cost of time decay could be a concern.

Kendrick also highlighted some of the unique features of Bybit options, such as USDC-settled options contracts — which means traders can use USDC to buy or sell options contracts. In addition, Bybit has been working with leading liquidity providers to provide the best-in-class liquidity to both institutional and retail traders. 

Options trading may look complicated at first glance, but as we navigate through uncertain market conditions, crypto options trading emerges not just as another trading instrument, but as a sophisticated tool for risk management and opportunity capture. The lineup of speakers included key representatives from projects like Merkle Trade, Panora, Balance, Vionex, Omni Finance, Aries Market, and Super Villain Labs, who later shared updates on their project initiatives.

Avery Ching highlighted Aptos' unique strengths as a blockchain platform, emphasizing its scalability, low transaction fees, and technological superiority. Ching traced Aptos' origins back to Meta's Libra/Diem project and discussed how its underlying technologies, such as the Move programming language and novel consensus protocols, empower developers to build decentralized applications (dApps) with unprecedented performance.

Key milestones from 2024 were also shared, including record-breaking achievements like handling 326 million transactions in a single day and achieving transaction costs as low as $0.008. Ching also previewed innovations slated for 2025, such as the launch of "Raptor," a new consensus protocol to enhance transaction speeds, Block STM v2 for dynamic parallelism, and Move 2.0 to simplify and accelerate dApp development.

Ching noted that Aptos' mission is to provide a decentralized infrastructure that scales to billions of users globally. This vision aligns with its commitment to creating a new internet that is accessible, equitable, and efficient.

YK introduced their offerings from Merkle Trade, a gamified decentralized trading platform. Merkle Trade allows users to engage in leveraged trading with gamified elements like trader levels and collectible items, which provide tangible benefits such as trading fee discounts. In Q4 2024, the platform launched features like direct deposits and wallet-less trading, allowing users to trade without requiring extensive knowledge of Web3 tools. For 2025, Merkle Trade plans to focus on casual traders who are new to decentralized finance (DeFi) by providing seamless onboarding experiences.

 from Panora, a decentralized exchange (DEX) aggregator, shared their commitment to simplifying DeFi trading by offering the best swap rates and a seamless trading experience. Panora's innovations include AI-driven tools, such as natural language processing for trade execution, which enable users to make trades by typing commands in plain language. Their roadmap for 2025 includes expanding AI integration and empowering Telegram bots to facilitate trading directly within the messaging platform.

Tri from Balance.Fun explained how the platform integrates Web3 gaming and social infrastructure to drive mass adoption. Balance.Fun evolved from ePal.gg, a gaming companionship platform with over 4 million users, into a comprehensive Web3 gaming ecosystem. Key offerings include unified game access, digital asset marketplaces, and creator economy tools like fan tokens. In 2025, Balance.Fun plans to launch the "Fans Protocol," enabling creators to issue their own tokens and build dynamic economies. They also partner with gaming giants like League of Legends to host tournaments and introduce Web3 rewards.

Adrian from VIbrantX positioned the platform as a one-stop shop for DeFi on Aptos. VIbrantX aggregates DeFi strategies, offering users a centralized dashboard for portfolio management and advanced investment strategies. Backed by the Aptos Foundation, VIbrantX is collaborating with major DeFi protocols to enhance the user experience. For 2025, they focus on launching new token incentives and expanding their protocol integrations.

Eric from Amnis Finance discussed their position as the largest liquid staking provider on Aptos, commanding a 60% market share. With $250 million in total value locked (TVL), Amnis Finance enables users to stake assets and unlock liquidity simultaneously. They plan to simplify onboarding by enhancing wallet solutions and launching an intuitive rewards system. Amnis Finance has ambitious plans for 2025, including expanding its TVL and further enhancing its liquid staking mechanisms.

Gabriel Wong from Aries Market shared updates on the largest lending protocol in the Move ecosystem, with over $600 million in deposits and $350 million in loans. Aries recently launched native USDT swapping capabilities, making it easier for users to participate in DeFi without incurring fees. They are also preparing for a token launch in 2025, with additional utilities and incentive programs designed to attract new users.

Joseph from Supervillain Labs highlighted their vision for revolutionizing gaming through blockchain technology. Their first title, 

, has already launched on Google Play and the App Store, and new titles like 

, an MMO adventure, are in development. Their mission is to bridge the gap between Web2 and Web3 gamers by offering a frictionless experience that combines traditional gaming elements with blockchain-powered features.

 have retreated significantly. While the hype surrounding NFTs has died down, some surviving NFT projects have been pivoting from NFT 

 (PFPs) to something that can potentially onboard Web 2.0 consumers into web3.

, we got a fresh overview of the current state of the NFT market, debated how building an AppChain could enhance the consumer-facing ability of NFT IPs and discussed what a post-PFP NFT era could look like. This edition of 

 recaps the Mastermind livestream (in case you missed it), offering comprehensive expertise and insights from leading figures in the NFT space.

Our Nov 5, 2024 livestream hosted experts with strong NFT backgrounds, including representatives from the marketplace and different blue chip NFT communities. Our four guests were as follows:

The discussion started with the question of whether NFTs are still relevant to the broader web3 and crypto market. Despite all the ups and downs in NFT markets, all of the panelists agreed that NFTs remain an important part of the web3 ecosystem, largely because NFT communities are still loyal to their favorite NFT IPs, and that “stickiness” hasn’t been affected by the fluctuation in floor prices.

The discussion then moved to what has actually caused the decline of the NFT market. Some panelists highlighted that the web3 user journey itself may not encourage users to onboard the ecosystem. JackLu remarked that "NFT is a purely web3 and on-chain use case; you have to onboard to a CEX, go download a wallet, go to a marketplace to start trading, but that process sits many steps behind for a new user to come to the ecosystem. During the bear market over the last two years, very few users were coming into the ecosystem, and trying to get new people to NFT was just extraordinarily hard from a pure user experience perspective."

He also highlighted that new users were finding it difficult to get into the NFT ecosystem because of the steep learning curve. Due to the lack of new users, the NFT market became increasingly stagnant during the market downturn. The panel also pointed out that heavy financialization has diverted NFTs’ original purpose of having fun with a group of like-minded people, which could also be part of the reason for the decline of the NFT market.

In the second part of the discussion, the panel took a deep dive into a recent development involving surviving NFT projects: the launch of an AppChain. 

AppChains are blockchains designed and optimized for running specific applications, or fulfilling a particular business need. Their purpose is to reduce congestion, lower transaction costs and help a particular ecosystem improve on-chain processing efficiency.

The recent mainnet launch of ApeChain, an AppChain backed by Yuga Labs, has made a lot of noise in the market. On the other hand, NFT project Azuki announced its AnimeChain earlier, an Arbitrum-based AppChain, and Pudgy Penguins' parent company announced its Layer 2 Abstract, a consumer crypto–focused blockchain. 

The panel shared their belief that this AppChain launching phenomenon could be an ecosystem expansion strategy similar to what some Web 2.0 IP holders have been adopting. For example, companies like Disney have spent enormous resources building and growing their IPs and brands, as well as launching physical products and services around those IPs, and ultimately, they have their ecosystem. With AppChain, NFT IP owners could do the same in a web3 and decentralized manner.

Besides the launching of AppChains, the panel also discussed the relationship between NFTs and web3 gaming. The conclusion was that there are builders taking advantage of this softer market to build something meaningful “under the hood.” After all, creating a good game title and its related infrastructure takes time, and some of the panelists have seen promising signs from these builders.

With all the innovations and efforts, the future of NFTs remains positive, even after the space has passed its hype cycle. After all, the NFT itself is a technology, and PFP is just one use case for this technology. Moving forward with innovations that can improve user experience, there's a chance for more and more NFT PFP use cases in the future.

In the final part of the discussion, all the panelists gave their takes on the future of NFTs, along with some advice to creators and builders. Jack believes builders should focus on the long term, building something that’s authentic to themselves and avoiding "Shiny Object Syndrome." Dennis highlighted that besides products, the community is also a crucial part of NFTs. His friendships with builders may last a lifetime, and the value of their contributions added back to the projects could be greater than expected. 

NFTs may not be the most trending topic in the current web3 space, but the underlying technology is undeniably transformative. As NFTs pass through the hype cycle and move on from speculation-driven to builder-driven, their technology could be a gateway for onboarding general consumers to the web3 realm.

Altcoins in Focus: Solana, Ethereum and Sui

This episode begins with Michael Ionita describing how Ethereum’s performance has been based on the narrative: when making their crypto selections, investors ask what makes the technology interesting and what’s in its road map. There’s nothing wrong with Ethereum per se, but neither is there any perceptible excitement in its future plans.

In comparison, Michael says that Sui is the new kid on the block. It has a startup mentality with better tech, so it’s exciting. He introduces a chart that indicates the downward trends of both Bitcoin and Ethereum, then presents charts for Sui and Solana, indicating that investors have been better off holding these altcoins.

Juan David supports Michael’s perspective, adding that people want to find the next big thing. He then describes how Solana stands apart from altcoins related to Ethereum. These other altcoins’ performances are tied somewhat to Ethereum’s performance. On the other hand, Solana has its own vibrant community that’s passionate about the smoothness and utility of the platform. Because Solana’s community heavily comprises vision traders or early adopters, other new altcoins have been trying to attract their attention. On the other hand, the 

 invested in Ethereum aren’t interested in trying new things. They like Ethereum, because it’s time-tested and safe.

Juan David describes how the latest technology is based on a large investment from Facebook. Both Sui and Aptos have benefited from this technology, and their competition has pushed the technology forward. Traders can build long positions into these assets with downside protection, which differentiates such cryptos from SOL. He mentions that these altcoins have been aggressively searching for new investors, which sets them apart from other projects that also have great technology.

Juan David states that the one thing guaranteed in the industry is volatility. Direction isn’t guaranteed, and building a portfolio of altcoins and going long might not be wise. When you use volatility properly, it’s your friend in altcoin trading.

Michael shares his screen again to demonstrate a strategy: his method for selecting altcoins is to identify when Bitcoin is weak. Look for the altcoins that rally at those times, and add some of these altcoins to your portfolio — a simple method to use when you don’t have access to charts. However, he warns investors not to use altcoins that have been hot during the previous cycle.

Juan David states that investing in Bitcoin is a low- to medium-risk investment strategy, but it might not be the most profitable one. The broader trading landscape in crypto has been rapidly changing after many 

. Our panelists highlighted that measures such as 

 could improve the transparency of centralized trading platforms. 

On the other hand, some DEX operators have been increasing their efforts to improve product design, offering a smoother user journey and trading experience, making it more comparable with their centralized counterparts and lowering the entry barriers to onboarding new users.

From a trading volume perspective, the panelists agreed that CEXs are still dominating, despite the strong growth in DeFi and decentralized platforms. Liquidity could be one of the reasons behind this volume gap: most institutional traders generally trade with larger volumes, and prefer trading with centralized platforms for their deeper liquidity.

Although CEXs may dominate the overall trade volume, the panelists highlighted that users of CEXs and DEXs could simply consist of two fundamentally different user profiles. While CEXs appeal more to institutional users and trading newbies, DEXs are more conducive to advanced users and DeFi enthusiasts.

The panel also discussed the potential of more institutional traders adopting DEXs, which could be challenging. First of all, the trading environment and products on CEXs are very close to what they used to see in the TradFi world, while DEXs may not be the easiest to use at first glance. Besides the issue of liquidity (mentioned earlier), regulatory concerns also seem to be a legitimate reason as to why trading on decentralized platforms could be tough: institutional traders are often bound by their mandates and jurisdictions, making it simply too difficult for them to trade on DEXs under the current regulatory framework.

However, for some experienced retail traders, DEXs could be more appealing in terms of product selection, especially when it comes to 

. That's because most of the hottest meme coins in the market had their first launch on DEXs or decentralized launchpads, and these retail traders would be able to enjoy the most significant upsides if they could pick out the winners. In contrast, CEXs often require a more extended procedure when it comes to listing meme coins, making it less appealing to speculation-focused retail traders.

The panel’s experts also contributed their views as to what future centralized and decentralized trading will be like. Panelists agreed that it's likely we’ll be able to see a hybrid model in the near future, in which CEXs could adopt more features from decentralized platforms (such as 

) to offer even greater transparency. On the other hand, DEXs could onboard more KYB-ed market makers to provide more liquidity. Technology will also play an important role in the future of crypto trading in general. New advancements, such as 

, may improve the efficiency of general crypto trading. 

Most of our panelists also believe that regulation will play a more significant role in crypto trading, and that it will affect both centralized and decentralized trading platforms. Compliance costs will grow for CEXs, leaving them free to serve only specific jurisdictions with specific products. For DEXs, embracing regulation seems inevitable, although it's unclear what that will look like. However, greater clarity on a DeFi regulatory framework could open doors for institutional adoption of decentralized trading.
